Guild Festival Report 2011

emailprint

With Lyme Regis lying so far to the west of the Guild, there were members living in other parts of the diocese who, because of the distance involved, could not attend. Again, there were others who sent apologies because they were required for ringing at weddings, fetes and similar functions at this time of the year. A brief outline of the events of the 14th May, therefore, might prove of interest to all who could not attend the AGM.

Choral Evensong was led by the Revd Jane Skinner, team vicar, Golden Cap Benefice, lessons were read by Philip Clarke (Bridport) and Sue Philp (Beaminster) and the singing was led by a combined choir of 26 conducted by Andrew Nicholson. The newly installed organ was played by Linda Nicholson and as well as leading the hymn singing, accompanied the choir in Psalm 150 (Standford), specially arranged canticles and a short anthem ‘Lead me Lord’ with the solo sung by young Sarah Nicholson. The address was given by the team vicar. It was pleasing to see such a large congregation despite various apologies.

The AGM, held in the church, followed after the service. The President, Ross Robertson, extended a warm welcome to everyone, and the Master, Tom Garrett took the chair. Minutes of the last AGM, the financial review and various reports, all appearing in the latest Guild Report, were accepted without particular comment.

The annual subscriptions for 2012 are Adult £6.50, Youth (12-18) £5.00, Associate £5.00, Probationary £2.50 (The Branch retaining 25%).

There were no changes in office holders and the names of newly elected HLMs are P J Burry 50 years (All Cannings), Joan Edney, Chilmark and John Wiltshire, Chiseldon.

A report was given by Robert Wellen (Education/Training) and other topics discussed were Ringing Centres, Child Protection, Guild Striking Competitions and one minor change to Guild rules 5.4: to add “and members under 12 years”.

Forthcoming dates were confirmed: Open Day for LEBRF (north and east Dorset area) 20th August; Guild Striking Competitions at Bryanston and Durweston, 10th September; Guild Quarter Peal Week 29th October to 6th November.  Next year’s AGM will be held at Gillingham on the 12th May.

An excellent informal tea in the adjoining hall was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone – prepared and served by a host of willing people, a raffle raised over £90.00 for the LEBRF, and Thornford ringers ran a stall of home-made cakes to raise funds for their proposed bell restoration.

Ringing on the peal of ten at Lyme Regis took place before the service and again well into the evening, while other towers open during various times of the day were Askerswell, Bradpole, Broadwindsor, Hawkchurch, Loders and Uplyme (Devon).

Grateful thanks are extended to the West Dorset Branch in general for hosting the event, and particularly those hard working members who planned and ran a most successful and enjoyable day.

Ed.
