There has been a church on the site since Saxon times hence the name Warminster. It is the town's only Grade 1 listed building. The chancel tower and Lady Chapel date from the 11th, 14th and 15th centuries.

The present knave was substantially rebuilt and extended in 1866 at a cost of £12,500 and was re-opened on 21st February 1889.

In 1986 the 'West End' extension was screened off and adapted to form a separate meeting area with kitchen and toilet facilities with a gallery above.

The Commissioners of the 1553 Review of Church Contents showed St Denys as having six bells including a Sanctus. A new bell frame was constructed in 1637 by Legg, a carpenter, for the sum of £40. Until 1839 the bells were rung from the floor of the church but in that year the present ringing chamber was constructed in the tower with access by ladder. In 1881 the bells were refurbished, except for the tenor, and recast by John Warner & Sons of Cripplegate, London, and made up to a peal of eight bells. During the 1886-1889 restoration of the church an entry to the tower was constructed via an internal turret staircase.

In 1914 the present steel frame was constructed to replace the old wooden one by Mr Alfred Bowell of Ipswich. In 1960 the bells were all quarter turned, tuned and rehung by Whitechapel Bell Foundry at a cost of £750. During 1996 the bells were fitted with new clappers, crown staples and pulleys by Nicholson Engineering.
